Post 2, Chapter 2

“The emotional toll is obvious, but the spiritual weight is what drains your soul.”
Wicked Love

Some relationships leave a mark long after the conversation ends. You may feel tired in a way sleep does not fix. You may question your judgment, lose your peace, or find yourself carrying guilt that was never yours to hold. The emotional toll is real. But there can also be a deeper weight, the slow draining of your confidence, your voice, and your ability to believe that you deserve love without fear.

Narcissistic love can make control look like concern and possession look like protection. It can pull you into a maze where you are always trying to find the right words, prove your heart, or earn back the kindness that once felt so freely given. The more you try to make sense of it, the more exhausted you become.

The Pattern Beneath the Charm

At the beginning, attention can feel like an answer to a prayer. The admiration is intense. The connection feels certain. You may be told that no one has ever understood you the way they do. But love is not proven by intensity alone. Real love makes room for your thoughts, your boundaries, and your whole humanity.

When the charm shifts into criticism, blame, silence, or emotional withdrawal, it can be difficult to accept what you are seeing. You may hold tightly to the version of the relationship you first experienced. You may believe that if you are patient enough, quiet enough, or forgiving enough, the tenderness will return. Yet love should not demand that you lose yourself in order to keep it.

When Emotional Pain Becomes Spiritual Exhaustion

Emotional manipulation does more than hurt your feelings. Over time, it can make you distrust the discernment God has placed within you. You may begin to confuse anxiety with loyalty, fear with commitment, and constant sacrifice with love. You may pray for peace while living in a cycle that keeps stealing it.

That is part of the spiritual weight. It is not only the argument, the accusation, or the cold silence. It is the pressure to abandon truth so the relationship can feel stable for one more day. It is the quiet belief that your needs are selfish, your questions are dangerous, and your pain is something you should carry alone.

God does not ask you to call bondage love. He does not ask you to ignore what is crushing your spirit in order to preserve an image. Truth can be painful to face, but it is also where freedom begins.

Breaking the Strings of Control

Control often works by making you feel responsible for another person’s emotions, choices, and reactions. The strings may be guilt, shame, fear, or the hope that this time will be different. But you are not responsible for making another person treat you with care. You cannot love someone into accountability when they refuse to take responsibility for the harm they cause.

Begin by naming what has been happening without minimizing it. Notice whether you are free to say no, to ask questions, to keep healthy relationships, and to speak honestly without punishment. Pay attention to what happens when you set even a small boundary. A healthy relationship may have difficult moments, but it does not require you to disappear.

Reflection for Readers

What has this relationship been costing your peace, your voice, and your sense of self? Where have you been calling exhaustion devotion because you still hope the person will change?

Ask God for the courage to see the pattern clearly. Write down one truth you have been afraid to say out loud. Then share it with someone safe, a trusted friend, counselor, pastor, or advocate who can listen without minimizing what you have lived through. You do not have to carry this weight by yourself.

Closing Thought

The weight you have been carrying may not be yours to keep. You are allowed to choose truth over confusion, peace over performance, and freedom over a love that keeps asking you to become smaller. Healing begins when you stop calling what drains your soul the price of being loved.
